Purpose: There are unique changes in respiratory functions that occur with aging. When coupled with other age-related changes, the symptoms and presentation of altered respiratory functions can be under-reported by patients and undetected by health care professionals. This section describes the age-related respiratory changes and provides a hands-on experience to improve clinical assessment and monitoring skills for nurses and other health care personnel. We’ll also focus on optimal respiratory function for older adults as well as treatment of common acute and chronic respiratory illnesses.
Objectives: After completion of this program nurse participants will be able to:
- Describe aging related changes in respiratory function
- Demonstrate respiratory assessment and exam skills for older adult patients
- Recognize symptoms and physical presentation of respiratory illness for older adults
Presenter: Karin Schurrer-Erickson, RN, CNP, DNP, received her BA in Nursing form Loyola University and her Masters in Nursing and her Doctorate in Nursing Practice from the University of Minnesota. She has 13 years experience as a Gerontological Nurse Practitioner, is co-founder of the University of Minnesota Geriatric Interprofessional Team teaching geriatric care to medicine residents, PharmD and nurse practitioner students. She has past experience as a course coordinator and clinical instructor for the University of Minnesota GNP area of study.
