Stiff Competition for Nurse Practitioner Jobs... One year ago I was working with an NP candidate who was looking for a new job. After severalinterviews my client (the employer) extended a very attractive offer to the NP.But when it came time to sign on the dotted line, the NP declined the offerbecause she was afraid she would take a loss on the sale of her house. It is hard to believe there is stiff compition for NP positions when the shotage of primary physicians is so apparent. An article in the March 8, 2010 Newsweek by Mary Carmichael discusses this shortage but entirely underestimates the role APRNs could play in alleviating this shortage. She talks about "nurses and PAs" seeing patients with "Simple needs." She then goes on to say "If your just coming in to have your blood pressure checked and your pulse taken, you really don't need to see a doctor, and you probably don't even need to see a nurse." She only refers to nurse practitioners once. "Almost half the current nurse practitioners and physician assistants work in specialty practices, where the money is. Then there's the fact that there is a nursing shortage. How are nurses going to replace doctors if there aren't enough nurses to begin with?"
This artilce really needs a response and I am hoping to see letters to the editor on this one.

I think the job market is difficult according to the area of speciality. They are desparate for people in Psych/Mental Health and there are not enough of us to go around. I think the job market needs to look at the concept of the APRN versus just putting the ads out for the NP or the CNS. We also need to market outselves and let people know we are out there and are very competent providers.
